WONDERWORD made its debut in syndication in Edmonton and Montreal in 1970. In 1980, Andrews McMeel Syndication of Kansas City acquired the rights for distribution. The puzzle is available in two different formats: a 15 x 15 grid from Monday to Saturday and a 20 x 20 grid for Sunday editions. Some Sunday newspapers may feature a 15 x 15 version called TELEWORD due to space limitations.

Jo Ouellet, a Canadian author, originally created WONDERWORD. Beginning in 1980, David Ouellet started assisting his mother in puzzle creation. By 1984, David was responsible for the majority of WONDERWORD puzzles, and in 1994, his name appeared as a co-author. Following Jo Ouellet's unfortunate passing in 1997, David continued to produce the puzzles.

WONDERWORD is currently published in approximately 250 newspapers worldwide across all formats.
